1. Network (Internet), which was formerly the communications network used by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) for military purposes. 2. ARPANET was opened in 1969 with just four computers, allowing scientists to experiment with computer networking, the precursor to the Internet. In the 1970s, ARPAnet developed arbitrarily and set up new research projects, which eventually formed the "Internet". Researchers called it "the Internet" for short, and the term has stuck ever since.
